Electromyography

Electromyography, commonly known as EMG, is an advanced diagnostic test that measures the electrical activity of muscles and the nerves that control them. It is used to identify the source of muscle weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, or other symptoms that may be related to nerve or muscle dysfunction.
Arlington PT is one of the few physical therapy clinics in the Arlington and DFW area to offer EMG testing in-house, allowing our team to gather critical diagnostic information and apply it directly to your treatment plan without the need for an additional specialist referral.

How EMG Works

An EMG test typically involves two components:

Nerve Conduction Study (NCS)

Small electrodes are placed on the skin over specific muscles and nerves. A mild electrical impulse is delivered to measure how quickly and effectively the nerve signals travel. This helps identify areas of nerve damage or compression.

Needle EMG

A small, thin needle electrode is inserted into specific muscles to measure their electrical activity at rest and during contraction. This helps identify whether the muscle itself or the nerve supplying it is the source of the problem.

What Can EMG Help Diagnose?

Carpal tunnel syndrome and other nerve compression conditions
Peripheral neuropathy
Radiculopathy (pinched nerves in the neck or back)
Muscle diseases and disorders
Nerve injuries following trauma or surgery
Unexplained muscle weakness or pain
Numbness and tingling in the arms, legs, hands, or feet

Why In-House EMG Matters

Having EMG testing available at Arlington PT means faster answers and a more connected care experience. Your therapist can interpret the results in the context of your full clinical picture and adjust your treatment plan immediately, reducing delays and ensuring your care is always moving in the right direction.

- Dan Linehan
Started here with some leg/knee issues after hurting myself while training for a half marathon. After working the Laney and TJ for a few weeks, I’m back to 100%! They were very knowledgeable, professional, and personable and made the recovery process as enjoyable as it could be. They did a great job of listening to me and addressing the cause of the issue and not just the symptoms. They also equipped me with tools to help me stay healthier in the future. I definitely recommend coming here for your PT needs!
- Jesse Martindale
